SOME THOUGHTS AROUND MY WORK

I work with phenomena and meaning in relation to light, shadow, reproductions, reflections and displacement. Transference and shifting positions. An expanded reality or experience. The relationship between objective registering and silhouette on the side of the designated focused centre.

 

I am searching for meaning in the great game, the break in the chain of thought, or shifting influences over time. From humans’ own explanatory models to the great political tableaux. Humankind’s inherent duality and ability to adapt, the shining light that blinds us, and casts an empty shadow behind us, the contents that escapes us.

 

Investigations constantly bring up further questions, and push and catalyse both the contents and the execution of the work.

 

An example of a specific, long-term project I am working on is the investigation of lightning. The projections from lighting outline and reveal, in a split second, the surroundings in a 360-degree angle. In this moment the dark, negative space reveals a social and historical position in a simplified and non-selective way. The source of light in this case is not a tool or an object for choice. The limit is set by the speed of the eye and the brain’s ability to register.

 

I have over the last few years become interested in and begun to focus on the challenges inherent in art projects in the public realm – be they short-lived and transitory or more permanent and stable – rather than in the gallery space.

 

It is the context and the potential for dialogue in the public space that engages me. The artwork’s fingerprint becomes less visible in itself, but other connections are formed over time. The inquisitive content here involves greater possibilities for me, even if the context and the complexities of the allied processes often carry with them great challenges.
