INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE PARKING GARAGE

Position and intention:

The Committee wants to let the navigation lights that direct the movement of shipping in the bay out in front of the concert hall become part of an art project, by marking them the centre for further connection to the local surroundings and the city.

There are many opportunities to mark the way to and from the concert hall: along the quay, via the two pedestrian tunnels to the city, or by making your way along the side of the old concert hall and Bjergsted park. It would be possible to mark the openings in the amphitheatre that lead to the car park, or work on the connection with footpaths and roundabouts.

The actual parking garage under the amphitheatre is an important part of this strategy. The openings in the amphitheatre are a continuation or beginning of the parking garage. The garage has an exposed construction, with ramps and load-bearing columns visible, and in places it is possible to look out, upwards or downwards at all the other storeys of the garage.

The Art Committee has an open attitude towards questions of position, scope and design for the art projects. They will be permanent, but could have changeable elements that, for example, are related to/connected to /controlled by features in the Concert Hall.

On the way to the Concert Hall the art anticipates the coming musical event, while on the way home it might be a bridge back to everyday life.

The Cathedral - Bjergsted Axis
From the Millennium memorial - with the old monumental building - to the new Concert Hall: the art projects could make links to Stavanger and pull the city centre towards the hall, and vice versa.

An open call for project ideas was announced in April/May 2009.
