The committee’s objectives for the art commissions is that the works will be the product of a comprehensive thought process that takes into consideration the overall identity of the area. The works of art should be largely independent and able to challenge the site, the social foundations of the surroundings, and the architecture. The various art projects should be able to integrate into a wider experience, while at the same time standing independently and resolutely within the context by formulating and presenting their own focus and relevant references to the field of fine art. These objectives require contemporary art works of high quality and integrity. The committee wishes to introduce and involve a variety of art practices with different points of departure, be they permanent, variable or temporary.
As part of the committee’s responsibility, emphasis will be placed on the connection between the sites that are part of the Art Project Plan. Empty areas provide breathing spaces for interactions with the architectural materials and proportions giving rise to new meanings, which enhance the experience. Places that remain untouched are, therefore, as important as the specific areas that will accommodate works of art.
The committee has selected two art projects for the Concert Hall’s core areas, and several smaller ones that radiate from these. By situating one of the main projects outside in the amphitheatre and the other, clearly visible just inside the glass façade, the works of art will be accessible to anyone arriving at the Concert Hall. The work located indoors, in the large stairwell, will change as people arrive and move around in the building. In the same way, the amphitheatre will alter its character and scale depending on where visitors find themselves. The committee sees this openness, where the building and its surroundings create a balanced experience, as a point of departure for the art projects and as an important democratic concept. Here, the communal notion of the site is created by joining those who find themselves on either sides of the glass partition together in one community.
