Invitation International pre-qualifying competition for STAVANGER CONCERT HALL

Visual artists, artists working in the field of applied arts, and collaborating groups
are hereby invited to take part in an international pre-qualifying round for the first
art project  for the new  concert hall in Stavanger,  to be completed in 2011.

Stavanger New Concert hall will be centrally situated in the Bjergsted area, a popular
park that also contains other cultural institutions  and two music schools. The building
is specially designed for musical events, but will accommodate many other kinds of
event for both large and small audiences.

The Art Committee for the hall is looking for candidates for a limited competition
to make an art project in the amphitheatre, the outdoor area in front of the concert
hall’s main entrance.

A forecourt runs parallel to the building, gathering everybody, including those who
arrive by bus or from having walked along the quay, at the main entrance. Those who
use the parking garage, access the hall through openings in the amphitheatre.

The amphitheatre has steps, ramps and landings that are to be used both to traverse
the space and to sit down. The major materials are concrete, stone and wood. The
combination of generous size, the sheltered position and the view of the sea, make
the area unique in Stavanger. This is an attractive social space that is ideal for use,
even during daytime and outside concert hours.

An art project related to the amphitheatre should reinforce the intentions already
present.  It must have the ability to engage with the place; be inviting, inclusive and
challenging, and should encourage different ways of involvement from the public.
The art must have integrity and make a significant difference to the concert hall area.

The presentation for the pre-qualification should be maximum ten A4 pages (on
paper, not e-mail or CD). The presentation should consist of  CV, presentation of art
projects, practice and relevant experience. The Art Committee also wants a brief
motivation and reason for interest in the project. No ideas or sketches for this project
are wanted at this stage.
