The Upper Foyer as a site for an art project will involve using the inside of the undulating wall that runs the full 95-meter length of the building. The height ranges from 2.7 to 6.4 meters. This is an area where audiences will gather before a performance or during the interval. An unobtrusive, abstract work of art that takes into consideration the audience’s expectations, discussions and reflections would, therefore, be appropriate. A range of solutions could be possible including painting/wall drawing, light/projection, sculpture / relief / installation, or tactile materials.
In order to find artists capable of handling such a large commission and enhancing Kilden’s position as an exiting landmark that accommodates a range of artistic expressions, the committee and KORO announced an international pre-qualification stage in June 2008. By the deadline of 1 September 2008, 132 artists had expressed interest in being included in a limited competition for the Upper Foyer commission. In addition to the artists selected from the prequalification stage, the committee could invite artists directly to the limited competition.
In February 2009 the artists were chosen for the competition that will start autumn 2009, including the following artists:
Katarina Löfström

Vong Phaophanit/Claire Obussier
Felice Varini

Josefine Lyche

The artists have until the end of 2009 to deliver proposals for the jury to assess. The winner will be announced during a
planned exhibition of all of the proposals in Kristiansand in the spring of 2010. Further information on the outcome and details
of the exhibition can be found on these web pages.
