The concrete floor as a site for art projects consists of a 3000 m2 surface, which runs uninterrupted from the quayside to the foyer. The large interior/exterior floor creates a classic cultural concourse with a unique identity for both visitors to Kilden and passers-by.
In order to find artists capable of handling such a large commission and enhancing Kilden’s position as an exiting landmark that accommodates a range of artistic expressions, the committee and KORO announced an international pre-qualification stage in June 2008. By the deadline of 1 September 2008, 65 artists had expressed interest in being included in a limited competition for the Concrete Floor commission. In addition to the artists selected from the prequalification stage, the committee could invite artists directly to the limited competition.
In February 2009 the limited competition started, and included the following artists:
Brian Tolle,
Xavier Veilhan,
Tommi Grönlund/Petteri Nisunen ,
Beret Aksnes/Vegar Moen,
Merete Christensen/Anne Baardsgaard,
Sofie Berntsen
In July 2009 the artist duo
Beret Aksnes/Vegar Moen was announced as winner.
