KORO

 

  • is a government agency sorting under the Ministry of Culture
  • was established by a parliamentary decision of November 30, 1976, under the name Utsmykkingsfondet for nye statsbygg [the national foundation for art in new government buildings], and has been in operation since 1977
  • changed its name in 2007 from Utsmykkingsfondet [the National Foundation for Art in Public Buildings] to Kunst i offentlige rom – KORO [Public Art Norway]
  • allocates approximately NOK 40 million annually for art in public settings. Combined with the co-payments made by the individual municipal and county administrations for projects receiving funding from KORO, this amounts to an annual budget of NOK 50-60 million for the production of artwork.
  • had 228 projects in progress in 2007, of which 62 were for government-owned buildings; 10 for buildings rented by government agencies; 126 for municipal administration buildings; and 30 for outdoor spaces
  • had, as of December 31, 2008, completed approximately 743 art projects in government buildings and institutions, which has resulted in some 6000 artworks
  • has funded art projects in some 636 municipal and county administration buildings since 1992
  • has provided financial support for 71 projects in outdoor public spaces since 2001
  • has its administrative office in Oslo with 13 permanent employees in 2008 and approximately 130 art consultants on contract throughout the country at all times
  • has the final administrative responsibility for artwork from KORO projects in a government context
  • produces its own publications, organizes seminars, conferences, classes, etc.  
  • collaborates actively with other art and cultural institutions throughout the country
